⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and the vehicle is on level ground with wheels chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not need to start the engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the button on the front of the shifter and move to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move out of Park due to failed shift interlock, locate the shift-lock override slot
- The shift-lock override is a small rectangular slot with a removable cover, located on the right side of the shifter base (between the shifter and the center console sidewall)
- Remove the cover cap by prying gently with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or the ignition key into the slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move to Neutral
- The vehicle can now be pushed or towed with rear wheels on the ground (front-wheel lift towing) or flatbed

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, turn the ignition key to ON position (this is a mechanical key, not electronic). This provides power to release the shift interlock when you press the brake. If the battery is completely dead and the brake-shift interlock solenoid won't release, use the shift-lock override slot as described above—the override is a mechanical release that does not require electrical power.
