🚨 1993 Lexus SC 400: Emergency Neutral

The 1993 SC 400 (Z30 chassis, second generation) has a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with a button on the front of the shift knob.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and the vehicle is on level ground with wheels chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not need to start the engine)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the button on the front of the shifter and move to Neutral
  5. If the shifter will not move out of Park due to failed shift interlock, locate the shift-lock override slot
  6. The shift-lock override is a small rectangular slot with a removable cover, located on the right side of the shifter base (between the shifter and the center console sidewall)
  7. Remove the cover cap by prying gently with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver
  8. Insert a flathead screwdriver or the ignition key into the slot and press down firmly
  9. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move to Neutral
  10. The vehicle can now be pushed or towed with rear wheels on the ground (front-wheel lift towing) or flatbed

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, turn the ignition key to ON position (this is a mechanical key, not electronic). This provides power to release the shift interlock when you press the brake. If the battery is completely dead and the brake-shift interlock solenoid won't release, use the shift-lock override slot as described above—the override is a mechanical release that does not require electrical power.
