🚨 1997 Lexus SC 400: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 SC 400 uses a traditional column-mounted gate-style automatic shifter with a console-integrated lever and electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base near the center console
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available)
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If successful, release the override tool and shifter button, then verify the vehicle is in Neutral

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override should still function mechanically. You may need to turn the key physically to ACC position to unlock the steering column, even without electrical power. Insert the override tool and apply firm pressure while manipulating the shifter; the mechanism is cable-actuated and does not require electrical power to release.
