🚨 2007 Lexus SC 430: Emergency Neutral

The 2007 SC 430 uses a console-mounted gate-style automatic shifter with electronic shift lock integrated into the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override: look for a small covered slot or button near the shifter base on the driver's side of the shifter assembly
  4. Remove the small plastic cover or cap (may require prying with a small flathead screwdriver)
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously depressing the shifter button on the side of the shifter
  7. Move the shifter to Neutral position while maintaining pressure on the override
  8. Release the override tool and verify the transmission is in Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter assembly on the left side, covered by a small plastic cap; consult owner's manual for precise location as Z40 platform layout differs from earlier SC models
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the shift lock override operates mechanically. Turn the physical key to ACC position to unlock the steering column even without battery power. The override mechanism is cable-actuated and will release the shifter mechanically, though you may need to apply significant force to the override tool.
