The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small covered slot or button near the shifter base on the driver's side of the shifter assembly
- Remove the small plastic cover or cap (may require prying with a small flathead screwdriver)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade into the override slot
