⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered slot on the left side of the shifter base, below the shift knob
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small rectangular cover cap
- Insert the key or a small flathead screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter is extremely stiff, maintain pressure on the override and rock the shifter gently while pulling toward Neutral

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You do not need battery power to use the override slot—simply pry off the cover, insert the key blade, press down the override mechanism, and shift to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be towed with the front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
