⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to READY mode if 12V battery has charge (hybrid system may still be operational even if 12V battery is weak)
- Locate the shift-lock override slot - look for a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to N
- If no brake pressure, continue holding override down and pull the shifter toward you and move to N
- Keep the override tool in place until shifter is fully in neutral position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid system will not activate but the mechanical shift-lock override still functions. The override mechanism is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power. Note that the high-voltage hybrid battery may still be charged even when 12V system is dead - do not attempt to jumpstart from hybrid battery terminals.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: Even with dead 12V battery, high-voltage system may be active. This vehicle MUST be towed on a flatbed truck with ALL wheels off the ground or with rear wheels on dollies. Towing with front wheels on the ground can damage the hybrid transaxle and generate dangerous voltage. If vehicle will not shift to N, it must be winched onto flatbed in Park.
