⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift-lock override - it is a small covered slot to the left of the shifter base on the console
- Use the ignition key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to remove the override cover cap
- Insert the key or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override button down, press the brake pedal if available and move the shifter to N
- If no power for brake lights, continue holding override and apply force to move shifter to N - it may require more effort
- Once in neutral, the shifter should remain in that position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift-lock override is mechanical and will still function. You will not have brake lights or any electronic shifter assistance, so additional force may be needed to move the shifter. The electronic parking brake (if equipped) may not release without power - if EPB is stuck, vehicle must be towed on flatbed. Steering lock may also engage without power, requiring flatbed with front wheels off ground.
