🚨 2003 Lincoln Aviator: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 Aviator uses a traditional column-mounted gear selector lever with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available.
  3. Locate the shift lock override access—it is a small rubber cap or cover on the column shroud directly below the shifter lever.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the access cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter lever toward you and down into Neutral.
  6. If successful, the shifter will release and you can move it to Neutral; keep the screwdriver depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral.
  7. Replace the access cover after completing the procedure.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot turn the ignition key to any position. The shift lock override will still function mechanically—follow the same procedure to access and depress the override mechanism. You may need a flashlight as interior lights will not function.
