🚨 2020 Lincoln Aviator: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 Aviator uses an electronic rotary gear selector dial (e-shifter) on the center console with full electronic actuation.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and wheels are chocked.
- Attempt to power the vehicle: press the brake pedal and push the START button without the key fob present, or connect a jump box to the 12V battery.
- If you can get any 12V power to the vehicle systems, turn the rotary dial to the Neutral position—it should engage electronically.
- If the rotary dial is completely non-responsive due to total electrical failure, you must access the manual transmission release mechanism.
- Open the rear cargo area and lift the cargo floor panel to access the spare tire well area.
- Locate the transmission park release access point—on the 10-speed transmission this is typically a white or yellow pull-tab/lever near the transmission tunnel on the driver's side of the spare tire well.
- Pull the manual release lever or cable firmly; you may need to pull it multiple times or hold it while an assistant rocks the vehicle slightly.
- Once released, the transmission should be in a free-rolling state equivalent to Neutral.
- The vehicle must now be flatbed towed—do NOT tow with wheels on the ground.
Shift-lock override location
Manual transmission park release lever/cable located in the rear cargo area under the floor panel near the spare tire well, driver's side of the vehicle.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the rotary dial will be completely non-functional. You MUST use the manual transmission park release in the cargo area. Even jumping the 12V battery may not provide enough power to actuate the transmission if the high-voltage system is also down. This vehicle cannot be shifted to neutral through the normal dial without electrical power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The 2020 Aviator hybrid has both a 12V battery and a high-voltage hybrid battery system. Even with 12V power restored, the transmission may not shift if the high-voltage system is faulted or depleted. If the high-voltage battery is severely depleted or damaged, the vehicle may enter a protective mode. This vehicle MUST be flatbed towed—never tow with any wheels on the ground as the electric motor and transmission can be severely damaged. Do not attempt to push or roll the vehicle long distances even in the manual release state.
