⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to the ON position (press START without pressing the brake pedal twice to reach accessory/ON mode).
- If you have any 12V power, press the 'N' (Neutral) button on the shifter panel—the transmission should shift to neutral even without the brake pedal pressed in some failure modes.
- If the electronic shifter is completely unresponsive due to total power loss, locate the manual transmission shift override.
- Open the small storage bin or panel in the center console forward of the cupholders.
- Look for a yellow or white pull tab/loop near the transmission tunnel—this is the manual park release cable.
- Pull the release tab firmly toward the rear of the vehicle to mechanically disengage the parking pawl.
- The vehicle should now roll freely in neutral. Keep tension on the tab if needed while moving the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
The push-button shifter requires 12V power to function. With a completely dead battery, you must use the manual park release cable to disengage the parking pawl mechanically. If the steering column is locked, you will need to jump-start or connect auxiliary power before you can steer. Consider using a flatbed with dollies rather than attempting to tow if steering is locked.
