🚨 2011 Lincoln MKZ: Emergency Neutral

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid uses a traditional console-mounted gear lever with electronic shift-lock and hybrid drivetrain.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Press the POWER button to turn on the hybrid system if 12V battery has any charge; if completely dead, proceed to override
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: on the console directly to the right of the shifter base, under a small rectangular rubber cover
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the override cover
  5. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool straight down into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to NEUTRAL
  7. If brake pedal has no effect due to dead 12V battery, continue holding override and move shifter directly to NEUTRAL
  8. Once in NEUTRAL, replace the override cover
  9. The vehicle can now be pushed or towed slowly for short distances

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override will mechanically release the shifter. The hybrid system will not activate, but you do not need electrical power to use the mechanical override - simply remove the cover, insert tool, press down, and shift to NEUTRAL. The high-voltage hybrid battery is separate from the 12V system and does not need to be addressed for towing.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID TOW WARNING: The 2011 MKZ Hybrid has an electric motor mechanically coupled to the drive wheels. When in NEUTRAL with the hybrid system OFF (dead 12V battery), the vehicle can be pushed or dollied for SHORT distances at LOW speeds only. For distances over 1-2 miles or highway speeds, the vehicle MUST be towed on a flatbed or with rear wheels off the ground (front-wheel-drive). Towing with front wheels on the ground and hybrid system off can generate uncontrolled voltage in the hybrid system and severely damage the transaxle and electric motor. If the 12V battery can be jump-started, place the vehicle in TOW mode per owner's manual before towing.
