🚨 2012 Lincoln MKZ: Emergency Neutral
The 2012 MKZ Hybrid uses a traditional PRNDL console-mounted shifter lever with electronic shift interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if possible (battery permitting) to unlock the steering wheel.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a removable rubber cap on the console to the left of the shifter base, near the driver's side.
- Remove the rubber cap by prying it gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or your finger.
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar thin tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if you have battery power) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, see 'No Power Notes' below.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the hybrid system will not initialize and the shifter interlock cannot be electronically released. You will need to jump-start the 12V battery (located in the trunk) with an external battery or jump pack to provide enough power to release the shift lock and move the shifter to Neutral. Once the 12V system has power, follow the override procedure above. The high-voltage hybrid battery does not help with this—the 12V system must have power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The MKZ Hybrid has a high-voltage hybrid battery system. If the vehicle will not power on at all, do NOT attempt to push or tow it with wheels on the ground. The hybrid transaxle can be damaged if towed improperly. Always use a flatbed or wheel-lift with rear wheels OFF the ground. If you have 12V power and can shift to Neutral, the vehicle may be briefly rolled onto a flatbed, but do not tow for any distance.
