🚨 2014 Lincoln MKZ: Emergency Neutral

The 2014 MKZ Hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shifter lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake and confirm the vehicle is on a level surface.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON or ACC position if you have any 12V battery power remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is on the left side of the shifter base console, covered by a small removable cap.
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the cap.
  5. Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power is available) and shift to Neutral.
  7. If the 12V battery is completely dead, see 'No Power Notes' for jump-start instructions.

With zero electrical power
Without 12V power, the shifter interlock and hybrid system will not operate. You must jump-start the 12V battery, which is located in the trunk. Use jumper cables or a portable battery pack. Once 12V power is restored, use the shift lock override and move the shifter to Neutral. The high-voltage hybrid battery cannot be used to power the 12V systems directly.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The MKZ Hybrid contains a high-voltage battery and an electronically controlled transaxle. NEVER tow this vehicle with the drive wheels on the pavement unless it is in Neutral and the hybrid system is on (Ready mode). For a completely dead vehicle, use only a flatbed or wheel-lift tow truck with the front wheels off the ground to prevent transaxle and electrical damage.
