🚨 2019 Lincoln Nautilus: Emergency Neutral
The 2019 Lincoln Nautilus uses a rotary electronic gear selector (e-shifter dial) on the center console that returns to center position after each selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
- The Nautilus uses a push-button start system—press the START button WITHOUT pressing the brake pedal to enter accessory mode, then press again (still without brake) to reach ON/RUN mode.
- With the ignition in ON/RUN mode, the electronic shifter becomes active.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Rotate the gear selector dial to the Neutral (N) position—the dial will spring back to center, but the transmission will engage Neutral.
- Verify Neutral is engaged by checking the instrument cluster display.
- If the brake pedal does not allow the shifter to move (failed brake-light switch), you must access the manual shift-lock override.
- Look for a small covered access panel or rubber plug in the cupholder area or lower console trim near the rotary shifter base—this may require removing the cupholder insert or trim panel.
- Remove the cover and locate the mechanical override slot or button.
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override mechanism and press/hold while attempting to rotate the dial to Neutral.
- If successful, the vehicle is now in Neutral and can be moved or loaded.
Shift-lock override location
The shift-lock override is typically located in the console area near the rotary shifter base, often accessed through the cupholder area or a small panel—exact location may require removing cupholder insert or lower console trim to locate the mechanical override mechanism.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the rotary e-shifter cannot function electronically. You must first gain some 12V power (jump-start the battery or connect a jump pack) to at least reach accessory mode, which powers the shifter system enough to use the mechanical override. Without ANY power, the electronic shifter is completely locked and you cannot shift to Neutral—the vehicle must be jump-started first or loaded onto a flatbed using wheel dollies with the transmission still in Park.
