The procedure
- Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if battery has any charge remaining
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Press the N (Neutral) button on the shifter panel
- If the shift-lock is engaged and Neutral button does not respond, locate the shift-lock override slot on the center console near the shifter button panel (typically covered by a small removable cap)
- Remove the cap using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a key, screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the N button
- If the vehicle still will not shift, check the owner's manual supplement for any model-year-specific emergency procedure, as push-button shifters may require minimal 12V power to operate
