🚨 2026 Lincoln Navigator: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Navigator uses an electronic push-button console-mounted shifter with individual buttons for P, R, N, and D (carryover from 2025 design).

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if battery has any charge remaining
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal
  3. Press the N (Neutral) button on the shifter panel
  4. If the shift-lock is engaged and Neutral button does not respond, locate the shift-lock override slot on the center console near the shifter button panel (typically covered by a small removable cap)
  5. Remove the cap using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
  6. Insert a key, screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the N button
  7. If the vehicle still will not shift, check the owner's manual supplement for any model-year-specific emergency procedure, as push-button shifters may require minimal 12V power to operate
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
Push-button electronic shifters typically require at least minimal 12V power to function. With completely dead battery, jump-starting or installing a known-good battery may be necessary to engage Neutral. The shift-lock override may not bypass the electronic shifter's power requirement.
