🚨 2024 Lotus Eletre: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Lotus Eletre uses an electronic console-mounted gear selector with drive-by-wire actuation and no mechanical linkage to the transmission.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is engaged and wheel chocks are in place
  2. Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal and pushing the start button (even with depleted high-voltage battery, the 12V system may still function)
  3. If 12V power is available, the gear selector should operate normally - move to Neutral position
  4. If 12V power is completely dead, you MUST jump-start or charge the 12V battery - the electronic shifter will not function without power
  5. Once minimal 12V power is restored, press brake and move selector to Neutral
  6. For tow mode: with vehicle powered on, access the vehicle settings menu on the center touchscreen, navigate to Service/Towing menu, and activate Transport Mode - this releases the parking pawl and prepares the EV drivetrain
  7. CRITICAL: Verify the center screen shows Neutral and Transport Mode is active before towing
With zero electrical power
The Eletre has no mechanical shift lock override because the shifter is fully electronic with no mechanical connection to the drivetrain. You MUST have 12V power to operate the shifter. Jump-start the 12V battery (typically located in the front trunk/frunk area) using another vehicle or portable jump starter. Even a brief connection should provide enough power to shift to Neutral and activate Transport Mode.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
FLATBED ONLY: The Lotus Eletre must be transported on a flatbed truck. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground - even in Neutral, the electric motors are mechanically connected to the wheels and towing will cause severe damage to the inverters and drive units. The high-voltage system remains energized even when 'off.' Transport Mode must be activated through the vehicle's computer system before any movement. If Transport Mode cannot be activated due to system failure, the vehicle may need to be winched onto the flatbed with wheels locked.
