⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not need to start engine) - if battery is completely dead, see no-power procedure below
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered slot on the right side of the shifter base housing near the base of the lever
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the small rubber or plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park
- Shift to Neutral and verify the transmission is in N by checking the instrument cluster display
- Release the parking brake only when ready to move the vehicle

With zero electrical power
With complete power loss, the electronic shifter will not function normally. The shift lock override may not work without any power. If you cannot get 12V power to the vehicle (jump pack or jumper cables), the vehicle must be lifted/dollied with rear wheels off the ground (RWD model) or flatbedded (AWD model). Do NOT attempt to push or tow with wheels on ground - the transmission will not be in neutral and severe damage will occur.
