The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (battery must have some charge)
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console, typically forward and to the right of the shifter lever
- Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot (may require a flathead screwdriver or trim tool)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the tool while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If battery is completely dead, you will need to manually press the override while physically pushing/pulling the shifter - brake pedal press may not be required with zero power
