🚨 2000 Mazda B3000: Emergency Neutral

The 2000 Mazda B3000 (Ford Ranger platform) uses a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with electronic shift lock interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to ON position if possible (even with weak battery this may provide enough power)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Locate the shift lock override - look for a small rectangular slot or cover near the top of the column shroud just below or beside the shifter lever
  5. Pry off or remove the small plastic cover if present
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot
  7. Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
  8. Keep tool pressure on the override until the shifter is fully in Neutral position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the column-mounted shift lock on these Rangers/B-Series is purely electronic. The override slot mechanically bypasses the solenoid - you don't need any electrical power for the override to work. Simply use the screwdriver in the override slot. If the override slot is not accessible or doesn't work, you'll need to remove the upper column shroud screws to access and manually release the shift lock solenoid mechanism.
