🚨 2003 Mazda B3000: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 Mazda B3000 uses a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift-lock override button integrated into the shifter housing.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift-lock override button - it is a small round button on the right side of the column shifter housing, near where the lever meets the column
  4. Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override button and press firmly inward
  5. While holding the override button depressed, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
  6. If the override button is stuck or not working, the shifter mechanism can be accessed by removing the lower steering column cover (two Phillips screws underneath), then manually releasing the shift-lock cable at the base of the shifter assembly

With zero electrical power
With no power at all, the ignition will be locked and the steering wheel may lock. You will need to use the mechanical shift-lock override button while manually moving the shifter with force. The override button works mechanically and does not require electrical power. If absolutely necessary, remove the lower steering column cover to access the shift-lock mechanism directly and manually release the cable.
