⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (or ACC if the battery has some charge remaining)
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a cap/cover directly forward (toward the dashboard) from the shifter base on the left side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the cap covering the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, the shifter will move freely to Neutral; you can now release the shifter button and remove the tool
- Keep the override tool in place if you need to shift again (such as to Park after moving)

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock cannot be electronically released and the manual override becomes the only method. The override slot is mechanical and does not require battery power. However, you will not be able to turn the ignition to any position, so ensure the steering wheel is not locked before attempting to move the vehicle. The override will still function purely mechanically.
