🚨 2012 Mazda CX-7: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 CX-7 uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with a button on the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible to provide power to the shift interlock
  3. If the shift interlock is preventing movement from Park, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular cover cap on the console near the shifter base, typically on the right side or front of the shifter housing
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap
  5. With the brake pedal pressed (if functional), insert the screwdriver into the override slot and push down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
  7. If you successfully shifted to Neutral, remove the screwdriver and replace the cover cap
  8. The vehicle can now roll freely—maintain brake or chock control at all times

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override becomes critical. Turn the key to ACC (this may not power anything but mechanically unlocks the steering). Use the shift lock override procedure above—the mechanical override will release the shifter even without electrical power. If the override slot is difficult to locate in low light, use a flashlight and look for a small removable cap adjacent to the shifter base.
