🚨 2015 Mazda CX-9: Emergency Neutral
The 2015 CX-9 (first generation, 2007-2015) uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with a button on the shifter handle.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible to provide power to the shift interlock
- If the shift interlock is preventing movement from Park, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular or circular cover cap on the console immediately adjacent to the shifter base
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap
- With the brake pedal pressed (if functional), insert the screwdriver into the override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
- If you successfully shifted to Neutral, remove the screwdriver and replace the cover cap
- The vehicle can now roll freely—maintain brake or chock control at all times

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override is your solution. Turn the key to ACC (this mechanically unlocks the steering column even without power). The shift lock override is mechanical and will work without electrical power—simply remove the cap near the shifter base and use a screwdriver in the override slot to release the shifter lock. You may need a flashlight to locate the cap in low light conditions.
