🚨 2021 Mazda CX-9: Emergency Neutral

The 2021 CX-9 uses a traditional center-console mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a cap, positioned directly forward and to the left of the shifter base on the console
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no power available, continue holding override down while manually moving shifter to Neutral position
  8. Keep tool inserted or wedge it if you need to hold Neutral position during vehicle movement
  9. Once vehicle is repositioned, return shifter to Park before removing tool

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Insert tool into override slot and press down while manually moving shifter to Neutral. The override bypasses the electronic shift lock solenoid. You may need more force than normal without brake pedal assist, but the shifter will move.
