The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is applied if functional
- With ignition in ON/ACC position (if battery has any charge), press and hold the brake pedal
- Press the N (Neutral) button on the center console selector
- If the button does not respond due to shift interlock, look for a small shift lock override access hole near the P button on the selector panel
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override access to mechanically release the shift lock
- While holding the override, press the N button
- If completely without power, the transmission may lock in Park; access the transmission itself from underneath the vehicle - McLaren recommends professional towing service for dead-battery scenarios
- For flatbed towing without power, the rear wheels must be lifted or the vehicle loaded entirely onto the flatbed as the transmission cannot be reliably placed in neutral without electrical power

With zero 12V power, the push-button selector will not function and the transmission defaults to Park position. The electronic parking brake also engages.
