🚨 2016 McLaren 650S: Emergency Neutral

The 2016 650S uses McLaren's center console push-button transmission selector (P/R/N/D buttons) requiring electrical power to operate.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is secure and apply the parking brake if operational
  2. Attempt to power on the vehicle with the START button to activate the 12V electrical system
  3. Press the 'N' (Neutral) button on the center console transmission selector
  4. If the 12V battery is completely dead, the electronic transmission cannot be shifted from Park
  5. Jump-start the 12V battery to restore electrical power, then select Neutral
  6. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed truck with all four wheels off the ground
  7. Never tow with wheels on the ground - the dual-clutch transmission will be damaged
With zero electrical power
Without 12V power, there is no owner-accessible mechanical shift-lock override. The transmission remains locked in Park. The only solutions are to restore 12V power via jump-start or battery replacement, or transport the vehicle on a flatbed. McLaren service technicians may have access to transmission control methods, but these require factory tools.
