🚨 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300D: Emergency Neutral
The W124 300D uses a Mercedes column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift interlock requiring brake pedal pressure under normal operation.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake and chock all wheels securely
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 or 2 if any battery voltage remains
- Locate the shift lock override release - on W124 column shifters, look for a small rectangular or circular access hole on the underside or left side of the steering column shroud near where the shifter mounts
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot (depth approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch)
- Apply firm pressure with the tool to depress the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the shift lever toward you and down to Neutral
- With completely dead battery: the mechanical override bypasses the solenoid lock - maintain pressure on the override while shifting
- Leave the transmission in Neutral and remove the tool
Shift-lock override location
Small access hole on the underside or left side of the steering column shroud near the shifter base, approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep
With zero electrical power
Zero power means the shift lock solenoid cannot release electrically, but the mechanical override physically defeats the lock pawl. Insert the override tool fully and maintain steady pressure while shifting - no electricity required for the mechanical bypass to function.
