🚨 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300SE: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 300SE (W140 generation, first year) uses a column-mounted shift lever with an electronic shift interlock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with parking brake firmly applied and wheels chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (on) if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly.
  4. If the shift lock does not release, locate the shift lock override access point on the steering column shroud near the shift lever base.
  5. Remove the small plastic cover (if present) on the lower right side of the column shroud near the shifter.
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the vehicle key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button.
  7. Move the shifter to Neutral while holding the override and release.
  8. Verify the transmission is in Neutral before attempting to move the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
The W140 shift interlock is electronic and may be difficult to override with zero power. The mechanical override slot should still function, but you may need to simultaneously turn the key to position I or II (which requires some battery voltage to unlock the steering). If completely dead, jump-starting the 12V system or connecting a portable power supply is the most reliable method. Without any power, flatbed towing is recommended.
