🚨 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL: Emergency Neutral

The 1991 560SEL uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift lock interlock button on the lever itself.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (accessory/on) if battery has any charge
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the shift lock button on the side of the column shift lever while pulling the lever toward you to move through positions to Neutral
  5. If the shift lock button does not release with brake pressed, proceed to manual override procedure
Shift-lock override location
There is a small access slot or cap near the base of the column shifter assembly, typically on the right side. Remove any small cover cap and insert a small flathead screwdriver or key to manually depress the shift lock release mechanism while moving the shifter to Neutral.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the column shift lock may still be mechanically engaged. Use the manual override slot near the column shifter base. You may need to turn the key to position I or II mechanically (even without power) to release the steering lock, then access the shift lock override. If the steering wheel is locked and key won't turn, slightly wiggle the steering wheel while turning the key.
