🚨 2022 Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG W177: Emergency Neutral

The W177 A35 AMG uses a center console-mounted electronic shift lever with a P-R-N-D gate pattern and integrated electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly using the electronic parking brake button (pull and hold if no power).
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge remaining - this may allow normal shifter operation.
  3. If shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override access - on W177 models this is typically a small rectangular cap or slot near the base of the shifter assembly on the right side.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral.
  6. If successful, the shifter will release and move to N position.
  7. Keep your foot on the brake pedal during this operation even with no power, as the mechanical parking brake may not hold on inclines.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the electronic parking brake may not release and the shift override may be difficult to locate without interior lighting. Use a flashlight to locate the override slot. The electronic shifter requires at least minimal power to function; if override does not work with zero power, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with wheels free or dolly-equipped. Consider jump-starting the battery for just enough power to shift to N.
