⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
- Turn the ignition to ON position (or press START button without brake pedal to get accessory power)
- Locate the shift lock override slot — it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap on the left side of the shifter base near the P button
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cap covering the override slot
- Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button and moving the shifter to N
- If the battery is completely dead and you cannot get any power, you must jump the 12V battery first to energize the shifter electronics — the mechanical override requires at least accessory power to unlock the transmission
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
The AMG GT 4-Door shifter requires at least accessory power (ignition ON) for the shift lock override to function. With a completely dead battery, you must jump-start the 12V battery to get accessory power before the mechanical override will release the shifter. Connect jumper cables or a jump pack to the battery (located in the rear cargo area under the floor) or use the remote positive terminal under the hood.
