🚨 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Emergency Neutral
The 2010 C-Class (W204 chassis) uses a traditional center-console automatic transmission gear selector lever with a shift lock button on the top.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is set and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if the battery has any charge - this may restore shift interlock function.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly, then press the button on top of the shifter and move to Neutral.
- If the shift interlock will not release (failed brake switch or no power), locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the console.
- Use your fingernail or a small flat tool to carefully pry off the small cover cap.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar flat tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to the Neutral position.
- The vehicle can now be moved or towed (flatbed recommended for AWD models, check owner's manual for towing limits on RWD).

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shift interlock will not function. Use the mechanical shift lock override to release the shifter. If the steering lock is engaged (key cannot turn), you may need to jump-start the battery to unlock the steering column before the vehicle can roll freely. The shift override itself works mechanically without power.
