🚨 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Emergency Neutral

The W204 generation (2008-2014) uses a traditional floor-mounted console lever shifter with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake fully
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) if possible - this provides some electrical power to the shift interlock system
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered opening on the right side of the shifter base in the center console
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small rectangular plastic cover over the override slot
  5. While holding the brake pedal down (if you have any electrical power), insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
  8. If the vehicle will be towed, leave it in Neutral with the parking brake released (for flatbed) or applied (for short manual pushing)

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift interlock may still be partially engaged. The mechanical override slot will work, but may require significant force. If the steering wheel is locked, you will need to unlock it manually by turning the wheel side-to-side while attempting to turn the key (or have the battery jumped to at least position 1). Consider having the 12V battery jumped to ACC position to make the process easier, even if the engine won't start.
