🚨 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Emergency Neutral
The W205 generation (2015-2021) uses an electronic column-stalk shifter mounted on the right side of the steering column, similar to a turn signal stalk.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake (electronic parking brake button on the dashboard)
- Attempt to turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 using the start button (press without foot on brake) - even a weak battery may provide enough power
- If the electronic shifter stalk responds, push it down (toward the floor) and hold for approximately 1-2 seconds to engage Neutral
- If there is no electrical power to the shifter stalk, you must access the manual shift lock release in the center console area
- Look for a small covered slot in the center console near the cup holders or under the armrest storage area - the exact location varies by production date
- Remove the small plastic cover to access the manual release mechanism
- Use a screwdriver or key to press the mechanical override while attempting to rock the vehicle slightly or access the transmission directly
- NOTE: With zero electrical power, the W205 electronic shifter cannot be moved conventionally - the transmission may need to be put in neutral mechanically from underneath or the vehicle must be flatbedded
Shift-lock override location
The W205 uses an electronic shifter stalk; manual shift lock release access is in the center console area, but location varies. Some models require accessing the transmission directly from underneath the vehicle when completely dead.
With zero electrical power
The W205 generation presents significant challenges with a completely dead battery. The electronic shifter stalk is entirely electrically operated and will not function without power. Even minimal battery power (enough for ACC mode) should allow shifting to Neutral. If the battery is completely dead: (1) Jump start the vehicle to at least ACC mode to use the shifter stalk, or (2) Access the transmission from underneath - there is a manual release on the transmission itself that a technician can access. Flatbed towing is strongly recommended if no electrical power is available. The electronic parking brake also requires power to release.
