🚨 2004 Mercedes-Benz C240 W203: Emergency Neutral

The W203 C-Class uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap located on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side of the center console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover cap.
  5. Insert the key blade or a flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. If the shifter still won't move, ensure you are pressing the override fully down while applying firm forward pressure on the shifter button.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base on the center console, covered by a small rectangular plastic cap approximately 15mm x 8mm.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. You do NOT need battery power to use the override - simply remove the cover cap, insert the key blade, press down, and shift to Neutral. The override physically disengages the shift lock solenoid's pawl mechanism.
