🚨 2020 Mercedes-Benz C300 W205: Emergency Neutral
The W205 C300 uses a column-mounted electronic shifter stalk on the right side of the steering column (not a console shifter).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if possible (electric parking brake requires 12V power).
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge (key in ignition, press START button without brake pedal).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the column shifter stalk down (toward the floor) to the first detent position for Neutral.
- If the shifter will not move due to shift interlock failure, locate the shift lock override access.
- The override slot is located on the right side of the column shroud near the base of the shifter stalk - you may need to pry off a small plastic cap with a flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade into the override slot and press firmly while attempting to shift to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled - steering wheel will be locked unless ignition is ON.
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the steering column shroud near the shifter stalk base, behind a small plastic cap - exact location requires removing trim cover for access
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: you cannot shift electronically. The override mechanism may not function without any power. You must jump-start the 12V battery minimally (even 9V may work for electronics) to energize the shift interlock solenoid, then use override procedure. If unable to jump, vehicle must be placed on dollies or flatbed with wheels free - steering lock will be engaged.
