🚨 2002 Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG: Emergency Neutral
The 2002 C32 AMG (W203 chassis) uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-light circuit, identical to non-AMG W203 models.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 or 2 (accessory or on) if battery has any charge
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the bottom of the gear indicator trim
- Remove the small plastic cover cap from the override slot (it may require prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade fully into the override slot
- While holding the override pressed down firmly, press the shifter button on the front of the lever and move the shifter to neutral
- If the steering lock is engaged and you need to steer, you may need to turn the key while gently moving the steering wheel back and forth to unlock it
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base, below the gear indicator panel, covered by a small rectangular plastic cap approximately 10-15mm wide
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. However, the steering lock may remain engaged and cannot be released without battery power. You will not be able to start the engine. For flatbed loading with dead battery, use the shift override to reach neutral, but the steering wheel will likely remain locked.
