⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- If possible, turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 using the key or start button (without starting engine).
- Locate the shift lock override: there is a small rectangular or square cap in the shifter surround, typically on the left side or front-left of the shifter base in the center console trim.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override mechanism down, move the shifter lever forward to Neutral (N) position.
- If steering lock is engaged with no power, you will need to provide 12V power to the battery to release the electronic steering lock before the vehicle can be safely moved.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override will function mechanically, but the electronic steering lock will remain engaged. You must jump-start the battery or connect external 12V power to unlock the steering before moving the vehicle on its wheels. For flatbed loading with locked steering, use dollies or winch straight onto the bed with minimal steering input required.
