The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- If possible, press the start button without pressing the brake pedal to activate accessory mode or ignition position 1.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is located on the column shroud near the base of the shifter stalk, typically accessed from underneath or the right side of the steering column cover.
- You may need to remove or partially detach the lower steering column cover to access the override—look for a small rectangular access hole or removable plug near the shifter stalk mechanism.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press or push in the direction indicated (usually downward or toward the column).
- While holding the override mechanism, move the shifter stalk to the Neutral position (push up once from Park).
- If the electronic steering lock is engaged with no power, you must provide 12V power to unlock steering before moving the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic steering lock will remain engaged and the column shifter may not mechanically release even with the override. Priority is to jump-start or connect external 12V power to the battery. Once power is available, the shift lock override (if still needed) can be accessed. Without any power, flatbed towing with dollies is the safest option as steering will be locked.
