🚨 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 C118: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 CLA250 (C118) uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with a conventional lever-style gate for P-R-N-D selection.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
  2. Locate the shift lock override access, a small cap or slot on the right side of the shifter base, near the console trim.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to remove or pry open the override cap.
  4. Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly to release the shift lock.
  5. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power is present) and move the shifter rearward to N.
  6. If there is no electrical power, keep the override depressed and use firm manual pressure to move the shifter through the gate to N; you may need to gently rock the vehicle to relieve pawl tension.
  7. Once in N, release the override and verify the shifter remains in neutral.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not operate normally. Use the mechanical shift lock override (remove cap, insert tool, press down) and manually move the shifter to N. If the parking pawl is under load, gently rock the vehicle to relieve pressure so the shifter can be moved. The mechanical override bypasses the electronic interlock.
