🚨 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 Coupe: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 CLE 450 Coupe uses a console-mounted electronic shifter lever with push-button P and electronic shift-by-wire operation.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake if functional.
- Turn the ignition to ON (or ACC if 12V power is available) by pressing the Start/Stop button without pressing the brake pedal.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- If the shifter is locked in P and won't move to N, locate the shift lock override access—typically a small round or rectangular cap in the center console trim near the shifter base.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the vehicle key to pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake and moving the shifter to N.
- If electrical power is completely unavailable, you must provide external 12V power (jump-start from another vehicle or portable battery) to the vehicle's battery to energize the shifter unlock solenoid—the shift lock cannot be mechanically overridden without some electrical power in this generation.
- Once in N, release the parking brake and the vehicle can be moved or loaded.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap in the console trim adjacent to the shifter base on the right side; exact location may vary slightly by trim but typically within 2-3 inches of the shifter lever.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not release from P using the override alone. You must provide external 12V power to the battery (jump-start or portable battery pack) to energize the shift interlock system, then use the override procedure. Without any power, the vehicle cannot be shifted and must be winched onto a flatbed with wheels locked.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a mild hybrid (48V system). The hybrid system will not engage without 12V power, but the mechanical drivetrain can still roll freely in N. Ensure the parking brake is released before towing. Do not attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground if the transmission is not confirmed in N—always use a flatbed or wheel-lift with rear wheels off the ground.
