⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) if possible to provide some electrical power; if battery is completely dead, proceed without power.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular or square slot covered by a removable cap, positioned directly forward and slightly to the left of the shifter base on the console trim.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap.
- Insert the key blade or a small screwdriver straight down into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (even with no power, maintain the pedal pressed) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Release the override tool and shifter; verify the transmission is in Neutral by attempting to roll the vehicle slightly (with wheel chocks removed momentarily under controlled conditions).
- If the vehicle must be towed, ensure it remains in Neutral and leave the ignition in position 1 or 2 if any battery power exists.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot directly forward and slightly left of the shifter base on the center console; cap pries off to reveal the override access.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the override slot still functions mechanically. Insert the key blade into the slot, press down firmly, and shift to Neutral without needing to turn the ignition. The shifter lock is a solenoid that releases when the override is pressed, even without power. You will not have brake lights, so use extreme caution and chock wheels securely.
