⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) if possible to provide some electrical power; if battery is completely dead, proceed without power.
- Locate the shift lock override: on the C208, look for a small covered slot near the base of the shifter on the console, typically on the left side or just forward of the shifter lever.
- Pry off the small plastic cover cap using a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade.
- Insert the key blade or a small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly to release the shift lock mechanism.
- While holding the override pressed, apply the brake pedal (or maintain pressure even without power) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Release the override tool and shifter; verify Neutral engagement by attempting to roll the vehicle slightly (with appropriate safety measures).
- If towing is required, leave the transmission in Neutral and turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 if battery power permits.
Shift-lock override location
Small plastic-covered slot near the shifter base on the center console, typically to the left side or forward of the lever; exact position may vary slightly by model year within C208 generation.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override still works mechanically. Insert the key or screwdriver into the override slot, press firmly, and shift to Neutral. The solenoid lock releases mechanically via the override, so no electrical power is needed for this function. Without power, you will have no brake lights or ignition accessories, so take extra care with wheel chocks and surroundings.
