🚨 2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK430 C208: Emergency Neutral

The C208 CLK430 has a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake interlock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery power is available.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot covered by a removable plastic cap, located on the left side of the shifter base console, near the driver's side edge.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal end of the key to pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  6. Keep the override pressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position.
  7. If moving the vehicle, have an assistant ready to apply brakes or chock wheels immediately after placing in Neutral.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot remains functional - no electrical power is required to mechanically release the shift lock. Follow the same override procedure. However, turning the steering wheel will be extremely difficult without power steering, and you will need to manually release the steering lock by inserting and turning the key in the ignition cylinder.
