The C209 CLK500 has a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock and a more integrated design than the previous C208 generation.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override: there is a small plastic cover panel on the console immediately forward of the shifter gate on the driver's side.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry up this cover panel - it may also be directly adjacent to the shifter on the left side depending on specific trim.
- Once the cover is removed, you will see a small slot or button mechanism.
- Insert a screwdriver into the slot and press down or push the release mechanism while simultaneously pulling the shifter from Park toward Neutral.
- Maintain pressure on the override until the shifter is fully seated in Neutral.
- If moving the vehicle, have an assistant ready to apply brakes or chock wheels immediately after placing in Neutral.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override remains functional and no electrical power is required to release the shift lock. Follow the same override procedure. The steering lock will require the key to be inserted and turned in the ignition to unlock the steering column, which may be stiff without power assist. Note that some C209 models may have difficulty with door locks when completely dead - you may need to use the physical key in the driver's door.
