🚨 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLS: Emergency Neutral

The first-generation CLS (C219, 2005-2010) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock integrated with the brake interlock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition to position II (on) if you have any battery power remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override access: there is a small rectangular cover cap on the left side of the shifter base console, near the front edge of the shifter gate.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the key blade to carefully pry off or lift the plastic cover cap.
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar rigid tool straight down into the override slot beneath the cover.
  6. Press down firmly on the tool to mechanically release the shift lock.
  7. While maintaining downward pressure on the override tool, press the release button on the front of the shifter handle and move the shifter to Neutral.
  8. If the vehicle has no electrical power, the mechanical override will still function—keep the tool pressed down while shifting.
  9. Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the cover cap.
  10. The vehicle can now roll freely; keep it secured until you are ready to move it.

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is a mechanical release that functions without electrical power. Insert the tool into the override slot, press down firmly, and shift to Neutral while pressing the shifter button. Without power, you will not have power steering, brake assist, or instrument cluster feedback, so use caution.
