The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake if functional
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press START button twice without brake pedal) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access - it is a small square or rectangular cap on the right side of the shifter base assembly near the center console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override access cap
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter rearward toward Neutral
- The mechanical override disengages the shift lock solenoid allowing manual movement of the shifter
- If successful in reaching Neutral, you can now push the vehicle or load onto flatbed

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift-by-wire system is non-functional. Jump-start the 12V battery even briefly (battery in trunk, jump point under hood) to power the shifter electronics and disengage park. If jump-starting is impossible, use the mechanical shift lock override as described - this override releases the mechanical lock that prevents shifter movement, but the transmission may still be in Park electronically. The vehicle must be flatbedded with wheel dollies or dragged onto the flatbed - do NOT tow with drive wheels on ground.
