⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- If the brake pedal shift interlock is preventing shifter movement, locate the shift lock override access cover—a small rectangular plastic cap on the console directly to the right side of the shifter base.
- Use a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool to carefully pry off the override access cover.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button on the front of the shift knob and move the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
- Remove the tool and replace the access cover.

With zero electrical power
The W211 E-Class shifter is mechanically linked to the transmission. With a dead battery, the shift lock override procedure above will work to release the shifter from Park into Neutral without any electrical power. The override is a purely mechanical release of the shift interlock solenoid.
