⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the small rectangular shift-lock override slot - it is on the right side of the shifter assembly, typically covered by a small plastic cap that can be pried off with a flatbed key or small screwdriver.
- Remove the override cap by gently prying it upward.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and push down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If moving to Neutral for towing, the vehicle can now roll freely - ensure wheel chocks are in place before releasing parking brake.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot still functions mechanically. You will NOT be able to turn the steering wheel (it will be locked) and the shifter gate may be stiff, but the override slot allows mechanical release of the shift lock. Insert tool into override slot and push down while moving shifter - no electrical power required for this mechanism.
