🚨 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 E-Class (W212 generation) uses a floor-mounted electronic gear selector lever with Direct Select system and shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged.
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift-lock override release - it is a small covered slot on the console near the shifter base, typically on the right side or front-right of the shifter assembly.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the vehicle key to carefully pry off the small plastic cover cap.
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot.
  6. Press down firmly on the tool while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter toward Neutral position.
  7. The shifter should release and allow movement to Neutral - maintain pressure on override until shifter is fully in Neutral.
  8. Vehicle can now roll - ensure proper wheel chocking before releasing parking brake.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override still functions. The steering wheel will be locked and you cannot turn the ignition past position 0, but the shift-lock override mechanism is mechanical. Insert tool into override slot and apply firm downward pressure while moving shifter - this mechanically releases the locking solenoid. Note that on W212, the shifter may feel very stiff with no power.
