The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Press the START button twice without the brake pedal to bring the vehicle to ON/accessory mode and energize the hybrid system's 12V electronics.
- If the shifter stalk will not respond due to a failed brake-light switch or low 12V battery, locate the shift lock override.
- Look for a small removable cap or access panel on the right side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter stalk.
- Remove the cap and insert a small flathead screwdriver or key blade into the override slot.
- Press down on the override while pulling the shifter stalk toward you to engage Neutral.
- Verify 'N' appears on the instrument cluster display.
- For transport, the high-voltage hybrid system should be in 'Transport Mode' if available through vehicle settings, or the vehicle must be flatbedded.

With zero electrical power
The W214 hybrid has both a high-voltage battery and a 12V battery. If the 12V battery is completely dead, the electronic shifter will not function even with the high-voltage system intact. You must restore 12V power by jump-starting the 12V battery (typically located in the trunk or under the hood) or connecting an external power source before the shifter can be moved to Neutral. Without 12V power, the transmission remains locked in Park.
